NUS-Waseda DDP

Double Degree Programme between NUS College (National University of Singapore) and School of International Liberal Studies (Waseda University)

NUS and Waseda University’s Double Degree Programme (DDP) provides an opportunity for up to five students each from NUS College and Waseda University’s School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) to study at the partner institution. Participating NUS faculties in this DDP are the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science.

Waseda University is regarded as one of Japan’s top two private universities, and SILS is a small select college within Waseda. SIL’s underlying philosophy includes a global outlook emphasising intercultural understanding, and the school places a strong emphasis on internships and other activities (such as community and volunteer work) that will take the students outside the university.

Students who successfully complete the five-year DDP receive a Bachelor of Arts/Social Sciences (Honours) or a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from NUS and a Bachelor of Arts from Waseda University.

Selection and Admission

The Double Degree Programme (DDP) is restricted to 5 students from each institution annually.

First year NUS College students will be invited to apply for the DDP in their second semester. Applicants must possess a minimum GPA of 4.0, and are expected to submit a study plan detailing the fulfilment of their relevant graduation requirements.

While on the DDP, students are required to maintain a GPA of at least 4.0 for courses taken in NUS, and a GPA of at least 3.2 for courses taken in Waseda. Students who are unable to maintain the necessary grades over two semesters will be required to withdraw from the programme.

Structure

The five-year DDP requires NUS students to take a total of 200 Units. For NUS students, 120 Units will be earned at NUS and 80 Units will be earned at Waseda towards a Bachelor’s (Honours) degree from NUS and a Bachelor’s degree from Waseda. Waseda University offers a four-year degree programme without an Honours structure.

To be awarded an NUS degree, both NUS and Waseda students must satisfy minimum requirements for the grades received in NUS courses and the units (but not grades) earned in Waseda courses.

The unit requirements for NUS students to earn the NUS degree are indicated below:

NUS students will spend 2 years at Waseda, during their third and fifth year of study. An NUS student must satisfy the equivalent of 160 Units to graduate with a NUS Bachelor’s (Honours) degree. Of the total 160 Units, 120 Units will be read in NUS in Year 1, Year 2, and Year 4, and 40 Units will be double-counted Waseda units earned in Year 3. The distribution of these units is indicated in the Table A. The 40 Units earned at Waseda in Year 5 will not be used to satisfy NUS degree requirements.

The major and faculty requirements for each major, as listed in the NUS Bulletin, will be satisfied through the 120 Units read in NUS along with some courses read in Year 3 at Waseda that are mapped back to major and NUS College requirements at NUS. Please note that a maximum of 12 units (3 courses) and 8 Units (2 courses) can be mapped back to major and NUS College requirements at NUS respectively. Programme approval will be required prior to the student taking such courses at Waseda.

The grading and classification of the Bachelor’s (Honours) degree at NUS will be based upon the 120 units earned at NUS and unit (not grade) transfer for the 40 units earned in Waseda in Year 3.
