Champions of 2023 Inter-College Games

NUS College won first overall in the AY22/23 Inter-College Games. To celebrate this achievement, the participating teams and NUS College Club’s Sport Director shared their best memories about the games, teamwork and overall excitement

In the Inter-College Games (ICG) that was conducted earlier this year, NUS College attained the top overall spot, with eight Golds, six Silvers and one Bronze medals. ICG is an annual sports competition between the University Town colleges, usually taking place in Semester 2.

“The results came as quite a surprise, and I feel very proud of what our community has achieved, especially since NUSC is so new – yet we were able to win ICG on the year of our inception!” said NUS College Club Sports Director, Ashley Low (History, ’25).

The role of the Sports Directorate is to promote a sporting culture in NUSC through organising events and providing support to all sports Interest Groups (IGs). During ICG, the Sports Directorate also acted as the “eyes and ears” of NUS College, coordinating and publicising the match timings for fellow students who want to support the teams, and providing real-time updates of the results to the community.

Hear from the NUSC teams!

The Track team trained frequently in the lead-up to ICG, incorporating interval sessions in addition to their usual runs. They eventually won a gold medal in the Inter-College Games Road Relay race.

“Training was intense, tough but extremely rewarding as we learnt to push one another forward,” said one of the two Track captains, Jayden Lim (Psychology + Communications and New Media, ’26).

“As I was handing out the gold medals to the team, I felt more motivated than ever to bring NUSC Track to greater heights, with the goal of contesting for gold in the coveted Inter-Faculty Games.” – Jayden Lim, NUS College Track Captain

There were also various E-sports games to compete in for ICG, including League of Legends, Valorant, and Overwatch. The NUS College Mobile Legends (MLBB) team had their share of highs and lows in the ICG journey, but they kept their morale high as they fought on and eventually won second place, said the captain Andre Chua (Law, ’26).

Describing his ICG experience as “rewarding”, Andre recalled encountering a WiFi connectivity issue halfway through the match. “As MLBB was a time-sensitive game, we were slightly flustered when we lost connection. After reconnecting, we put aside our anxiety and regrouped, eventually winning that same game!”

Similarly, as for the Captain’s Ball team, co-captains (pun not intended!) Olivia Wong (Communications and New Media, ’25), Shaun Song (Law, ’25) and Rachel Tan (Environmental Engineering, ’25) were heartened to see the drive and determination displayed by teammates, despite not winning a medal in the end.

The trio shared in agreement that their favourite part of ICG was building a community around and getting to know more people, and thanked their team members for putting in their best for ICG, as well as fellow students who went down to support their matches.

“A lot of people were around to cheer us on, so we felt really encouraged and determined to do our best!” – Rachel Tan, Co-Captain of NUSC Captain’s Ball

Congratulations to all NUS College once again for winning first overall in this year’s ICG! They are: Basketball, Badminton, Bouldering, Captain’s Ball, Chinese Chess, Contract Bridge, International Chess, Dodgeball, DOTA, FIFA, Floorball, Frisbee, League of Legends, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Netball, Overwatch 2, Reversi, Road Relay, Smash Bros, Soccer, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Tchoukball, Touch Rugby, Volleyball and Valorant.

Achieving this feat could not have been possible without the hard work of many – from the Sports’ Directorate members, student athletes, to supporters from the community.

Ashley, Sports Director, said, “Thank you to all the participants for availing yourselves to compete for NUS College in ICG! I’m so incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved, and I have high hopes that we’ll only continue to get better from here on out!”
