The USP Experience

Life as a USP student was a combination of participating in academic programmes, interacting with peers, alumni, faculty, and staff on campus and engaging with different communities to bring about positive changes in the society they live in.

Community Life

University Scholars Club

Led by USP students for USP students, the University Scholars Club aimed to facilitate the creation of a cohesive community of leaders and thinkers through strong student, faculty and alumni engagement. This included managing various interest groups ranging from academic and cultural groups to sports, social and welfare-oriented ones.

The club also managed USP’s dedicated student lounge, Chatterbox.

Upon joining USP, all students were sorted into six unique Houses which helped to build a spirit of community and promote bonding:

Community Engagement

USP students actively engaged in various projects to assist communities in assessing their needs and implementing tested and effective programmes to address identified issues. Below were some of such projects:

  • Camp REConnection:
    USP collaborated with Ren Ci Hospital to organise Camp REConnection to reconnect the elderly and youths through a four-day camp comprising experiential learning, dialect lessons, sharing sessions and interaction with elderly residents at Ren Ci Nursing Home.

  • Connect Tuition:
    Connect Tuition was founded by USP students in 2014 after much research and relationship-building with the community living in Dover Estate’s Interim Rental Housing (IRH) flats. It brought together student volunteers from NUS and children aged 10 to 16 from the Dover Estate for weekly dinners at the UTown Dining Hall, with meal credits donated by USP students in NUS’s pioneer Donate-A-Credit Scheme, followed by a one-on-one tuition session.

  • thINK Mentorship:

    This was a writing mentorship programme aimed at providing secondary school students the opportunity to hone their writing and critical thinking skills. USP student mentors worked closely with the students over five 90-minute-long sessions to produce a deliverable at the end of the five sessions.

USP Archival Project

The USP archival project was led by two alumni, Michelle Phuah Kah Hwee (Geography + USP/NUSC ’23) and Ng Jia Yeong (Economics + USP/NUSC ’23). The site is a compilation of interviews with USP professors to celebrate the history of the USP programme and modules. and the everyday stories from alumni and faculty.
